Dedicated to influencing positive change within communities through her art.

About Isabelle

Hailing from the State of Maine, Isabelle Pazar is a flutist, educator, and scholar, currently based in the Northeast.

As an international soloist, Pazar has performed extensively across France, giving solo concerts and recitals at multiple venues in Paris including the famous Petit-Palais Musée des Beaux-Arts, the historical Salle-Cortot, the Residence of the U.S. Ambassador (Embassy of the U.S.), the American Cathedral, Fondation des États-Unis, College Franco-Britannique, the American Church of Paris, and the historical Salle Charles Munch. Pazar has been generously supported and presented in concert by the Fondation des États Unis, where she worked for two years as one of its select few Artists-in-Residence. She has also made appearances in Germany, Italy, and Canada, as well as across the United States.

Strongly committed to music education, Pazar received a distinguished Fulbright Scholarship in 2022 to study the pedagogical approach to the French flute tradition in Paris, enrolling as a student at École Normal de Musique de Paris to study primarily with Parisien based flutist Patricia Nagle and observing the classes of Michel Moragues and Philipppe Bernold at the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur. Chosen as one of only two artists to be honored with a Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship for 2023-2024 to continue her studies in Paris, Pazar spent a year researching the artistic approach to the french flute tradition, primarily studying with world renowned flutist, Jean Ferrandis.

Before her work in France, Pazar taught flute technique courses to undergraduate music majors at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, as well as music history courses covering topics from antiquity to modern day. In addition to giving private instruction to students in the United States and France, Pazar has given masterclasses and lectures at various academic and musical institutions, including Boston College, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Boston Flute Academy.

Fervently dedicated to influencing positive change within community through her art, Pazar has programmed, initiated, and directed various concerts, one of which was recently held in Paris, France in celebration of International Women’s Day with a musical program inspired by past French and present Fondation des États-Unis’ female composers who have enriched and diversified the musical culture world-wide through their music. That momentous concert culminated with Pazar’s debut of her newly commissioned work for flute and jazz piano trio.

Pazar obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston College, where she was honored with an Endowed Scholar Award each year of her studies and the Laetitia M. Blain Award for Excellence in Music Performance upon graduation. Boston College also granted her an Advanced Study Grant to pursue soloist, chamber, and orchestral performance opportunities in Italy. She obtained her Master of Music degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she was appointed the Teaching Assistant for the flute studio of distinguished flutist Dr. Cobus du Toit as well as a Teaching Assistant for the musicology division of the UMass Amherst Music Department. While at UMass Amherst, Pazar was also the Flute Fellow for the Graduate Wind Quintet.

Pazar is an alumna of the famed Boston Flute Academy under the Direction of Founder and highly acclaimed music educator and flutist Judy Grant, and she currently studies with world famous flutist Carol Wincenc at Stony Brook University working towards her Doctor of Musical Arts degree. Pazar will receive her DMA in December 2024.

Steadfast in her belief that the arts provide a powerful channel through which people can effectuate positive change.

Teaching Philosophy

Each student is unique in their abilities, goals, and musical development. Therefore, I tailor my curriculum to each individual student as everyone’s needs and learning process will vary. I make sure all of my students are equipped with the tools they need to be independent learners, critical thinkers, and imaginative players.

I view technique as the foundation and gateway for musical expressivity. Solid fundamental techniques are not just the foundation for moving forward with repertoire building, but they are also building blocks to a student’s self-discovery as a musician. From my own experience, I understand how great an impact a teacher can have on a student’s life, and how important these fundamental techniques are in a student’s musical trajectory.

I will mentor my students on how to market themselves as musicians through social media platforms, websites, and networking, how to access financial support for professional ventures through grant writing and fundraising, how to create concert programs that inspire and provoke audiences, and how to commission works that add greater representation in our music world.

My experience as an American studying and performing in France has fortified my knowledge of the pedagogical methods of the French tradition of flute technique, performance, and artistry, which I incorporate in what I teach my students. For beginners, it is important as a teacher to set realistic goals, to understand, to be patient, and to encourage. For intermediate students, it is important to challenge, but to listen and adjust expectations as learning becomes increasingly demanding. For advanced students, as the expectations become greater and the repertoire more voluminous and complex, it is important to balance drive with a healthy approach to the student’s expectations and goals. Positivity and encouragement are paramount to my teaching philosophy at all stages of musical development. Finding a student’s passion is the key to their success.
